Stepparents can serve as dependent applicants

On September 6, the Malta Immigration Service revised the question and answer session of the MPRP project. One of the most important updates is that stepfathers and stepmothers can now also join the MPRP permanent residence program as dependent applicants.

Below are the details of the latest official Q&A (Part 17):

Stepparents can apply for the Malta permanent residence program together with the main applicant or main applicant's spouse, provided that there is sufficient evidence to prove that they are truly related to the main applicant or main applicant's spouse.

The definition of true association includes the following situations:

a) The relationship was formed when one of the biological parents of the main applicant or his spouse remarried before he or she reached the age of 18;

b) The relationship formed by the remarriage of one of the biological parents of the principal applicant or his spouse before the marriage;

c) Before the main applicant or his spouse reached the age of 18, his biological parents divorced and one of them had custody, and the guardian had a new partner (it needs to be considered whether the new partner played an important role in the growth of the main applicant or his spouse).

★Supporting documents

a) Bank transfer records between stepparents and the main applicant or main applicant’s spouse;

b) A joint account owned by the stepparent and the main applicant or the main applicant’s spouse;

c) Air tickets for stepparents traveling with the main applicant or main applicant’s spouse;

d) A sworn statement provided by a certifier of the relationship (such as a mutually acquainted relative or friend, etc.);

e) Household register;

f) Any other documents that are helpful to fully prove the relationship.

The above-mentioned relationship certification documents need to be prepared in advance and submitted to the Identity Bureau for review. Only after the relationship is recognized can the application for permanent residence in Malta be submitted together.
