Talent List Update

The Talent List is a list of occupations formulated to accurately supplement Hong Kong's labor force and alleviate talent shortages.

Talents who meet the professions listed in the list will enjoy entry convenience when applying for the General Employment Policy, the Mainland Talent Admission Scheme or the Quality Talent Admission Scheme.

The entry convenience is as follows:

➤General Employment Policy and the Mainland Talent Admission Scheme: If the job vacancies that the employer wants to recruit belong to the industries and professional fields listed in the Talent List, they can apply directly without having to prove the difficulty of local recruitment in advance.

➤Quality Talent Admission Scheme: Applicants who meet the requirements of the Talent List will be given priority after evaluation.

On February 18, the Hong Kong SAR government announced a new round of updates to the talent list, with new professions covering:

➤ Financial services industry: accounting professionals, Islamic finance professionals, senior commodity trading professionals;

➤ Innovation and technology industry: senior system architects, patent professionals;

➤ Legal and dispute resolution services industry: legal knowledge engineers;

➤ Aviation and shipping industry: surveyors, green shipping professionals, aircraft maintenance engineers.

After the update, the list covers 60 professional positions in 9 major industries with local talent shortages.

Hong Kong's population has risen for three consecutive years

The SAR Government Statistics Department announced on February 18: As of the end of last year, the total population of Hong Kong reached 7.5342 million, achieving the third consecutive year of growth. Among them, the number of permanent residents was 7.2671 million and the number of floating residents was 267,100.

This achievement is largely due to a series of introduction plans and optimization measures launched by Hong Kong to attract talents. Looking back over the past three years, talent has always been a key word in the policy addresses released by Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee every year.

For example, from the launch of the high-end talent pass program at the end of 2022, to the expansion of the list of universities in the plan in 2023, the establishment of the "Talent Service Office", and the continued update of the "Talent List" in 2024, the expansion of the list of eligible institutions, and the launch of the new capital investor entry program.

Looking back at the data of the Immigration Department, the number of applications for various talent entry programs in Hong Kong exceeded 220,000 throughout last year, of which nearly 135,000 were approved, and many talents brought their families to settle in Hong Kong.

Shang Hailong, founding president of the High Talent Service Association, said that in the past two years, about 500,000 people have moved to Hong Kong through the talent entry program, including about 370,000 adult talents and 130,000 dependents.
