It is noteworthy that this ranking has brought about significant changes, which has aroused extensive discussions and concerns.

Major adjustments to assessment indicators

From 2024, the World University Rankings will adopt a new scoring standard.

On the basis of the original six items, some adjustments have been made to the scoring criteria of the World University Rankings, and three new indicators including sustainable development, employment outcomes and international research networks have been added.

sustainability

According to the latest QS International Student Survey, 80% of students want universities to do more about the environment. In response to this call, QS has added a sustainability lens to the World University Rankings. This initiative accurately reflects the University's pivotal role in driving change for a sustainable future.

employability

QS has increased its focus on employability, and to achieve this, QS has increased the weight of employer reputation in its assessment methodology to 15%, and increased the weight of employment outcomes by 5%.

international research network

The indicator focuses specifically on how research in academia is aligned with international standards, and more broadly emphasizes the importance of collaborative research. This metric provides insight into the level of institutional research and international collaboration.

To be eligible for this ranking, institutions must meet QS' eligibility criteria.

In addition, it must pass the following three thresholds to be included in the sample for analysis. It should be noted that "analyzed" does not necessarily mean "published".

Global University Ranking TOP20

The ranking covers about 1,500 universities. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) reclaims the top spot for the 12th year in a row. The University of Cambridge remains firmly in second place globally.

The University of Oxford has improved further in this year's rankings, ranking third in the world. With its outstanding strength, Peking University has become the only university in mainland China to break into the top 20 in the world, ranking 17th.

Surprisingly, the University of New South Wales and the University of Sydney from Australia have emerged in this ranking, successfully displacing several well-known British universities and Singaporean universities; while the University of Edinburgh and Nanyang Technological University failed to maintain their previous rankings. 20 positions.

China (Hong Kong) University Ranking Performance

Earlier this year, QS announced adjustments to the ranking criteria, triggering predictions of a decline in the rankings of Chinese (Hong Kong) universities. So what is the truth?

In this ranking, there are 7 universities in Hong Kong, China, and 5 of them have successfully entered the top 100 in the world. Although the University of Hong Kong has dropped by 5 places, ranking 26th in the world, it still ranks first among Hong Kong universities.

Compared with previous years, the rankings of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology have dropped significantly, especially the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has dropped out of the top 50 in the world. The Hong Kong Polytechnic University became the only Hong Kong university that did not decline in this ranking, ranking 65th in the world.

City University of Hong Kong dropped 16 places to 70th globally. The Hong Kong Baptist University also dropped 14 places this year, ranking 295th in the world.

The ranking of Lingnan University has also declined to varying degrees, ranking between 641-650 globally.

It may take some time for Hong Kong universities to adapt to the new ranking criteria.

Ranking Performance of Chinese (Mainland) Universities

The number of Chinese (mainland) universities entering this list ranks third in the world, with a total of 71 universities on the list, second only to the United States (199) and the United Kingdom (91).

In this ranking, Peking University successfully broke into the top 20 in the world, ranking 17th, becoming the second highest ranking institution in Asia. Tsinghua University ranks 25th in the world and the third largest university in Asia.

QS officials pointed out that one of the reasons for the decline in the ranking of universities in mainland China is the impact of two standard scores in terms of employment.

Nearly 11.6 million graduates will compete to enter the job market in June this year, as evidenced by the current fierce competition for local jobs.

This trend is also reflected in QS' ranking of the employer reputation indicator, where 46 of the 71 universities on the list saw their employer reputation decline.
