Tens of thousands of Hong Kong students
Tens of thousands of Hong Kong students have enrolled in Mainland universities through the Diploma Admission Scheme.
The Mainland Higher Education Expo for the 2025/2026 academic year was held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on November 30, providing Hong Kong students who wish to enroll in Mainland universities with detailed arrangements and the latest information on the Diploma Admission Scheme.
The Acting Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government, Mr. Sze Chun-fai, said that the scheme has been implemented for 14 years and has achieved remarkable results. So far, more than 47,000 Hong Kong students have applied for admission to universities in the Mainland through the scheme, and more than 22,000 of them have been admitted.
In the 2025/2026 academic year, the number of institutions participating in the Diploma Admission Scheme will increase to 145, providing more choices for Hong Kong students.
Starlet would like to remind that the scheme has started accepting online applications since December 1, when the 145 Mainland universities will directly base on the results of the Diploma of Secondary Education Examination for merit-based admission, and students do not need to sit for the Joint Entrance Examination of the Mainland again.

Why are more and more
Hong Kong students coming to the Mainland for further studies?
According to the latest figures, there are roughly 23,000 Hong Kong students studying in the Mainland. Why do more and more Hong Kong students choose to study in the Mainland now?
Part of the reason is that some Mainland parents have obtained Hong Kong status through Hong Kong's Talent Entry Scheme to pave the way for their children's education planning.
In this way, their children, as dependants, can enjoy the treatment of local students in Hong Kong. Not only can they study in primary and secondary schools in Hong Kong, but they also have more choices in pursuing further studies, including universities in Hong Kong, the Mainland and overseas, and they have more advantages over mainland students.
Insofar as applying for admission to Mainland universities is concerned, apart from the Diploma Admission Scheme, Hong Kong students can also apply for admission to more than 440 Mainland universities through the Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students (JEE), or apply for exemption from examinations through the Independent Entrance Examination for Institutions (IEI), which allows them to apply for admission to universities such as those in Hong Kong without examination.
Regardless of whether it is the “Diploma Admission Scheme”, “Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and Overseas Chinese Students” or “Independent Entrance Admission Scheme”, Hong Kong students can usually apply for admission to universities with less competitive pressure, more lenient admission scores and more favourable conditions. Hong Kong students usually have less competitive pressure, more lenient admission scores, and greater chances of getting admitted to 985, 211 and other famous universities in the Mainland.
If you are considering applying for Hong Kong status, there are currently five mainstream channels to choose from:
① New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme
① New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme ② High-end Talent Pass Scheme
① New Capital Investment Entrant Scheme ② High-end Talent Pass Scheme ③ Quality Migrant Admission Scheme
④ Admission of Mainland Talents and Professionals Scheme
⑤ Arrangement for Non-local Graduates to Stay in Hong Kong / Return to Hong Kong for Employment
